The 2nd (black and white) shot of Wendy from "Closed Circuit" is the photo used for her 1982 entry in The Spotlight. |

AYBS?: "Roots?" |
The AYBS? episode "Roots?" (from December of 1981) is televised only rarely in the USA. I suspect that it has more to do with the plot's awkward ethnic humor, than with the first image's scene where Wendy bares Miss Brahm's lingerie. This pair of photos is a posed arrangement of the cast in Scottish dress, as they appeared in one scene in the episode. Interestingly, while Wendy's colleagues wear various red tartans, Shirley Brahms displays the noticeably lighter Thomson Dress (Blue) tartan. |

Clearly Wendy is kitted out as Shirley Brahams here -- the interview took place on the working set of Are You Being Served? With her in a couple of the images is Frank Thornton, who played the character of Captain Peacock |
Cinderella |
Likely these photos were done during an early dress rehearsal, since they appear in the program distributed during the run. The first photo is of Wendy and opera performer Jane Fyffe who played Prince Charming in this production. Note Wendy's rather mannish hairstyle, after the fashion of a powdered wig; this would be expected, since she was playing the role of Dandini, the male servant of Prince Charming. |

AYBS?: "Good-bye, Mrs. Slocombe" |
1984 marked the final season for the original AYBS? series (though the episodes weren't actually broadcast until early 1985). Ms. Richard was already working on the first set of episodes for a new continuing serial show to be entitled EastEnders. |

EastEnders |
The first image here shows Ms. Richard with other female cast members in a mock chorus line on the set of EastEnders. The photo was likely taken during the Press open house that was held at the Elstree set on 10 October 1984, since episode shooting wouldn't begin until December, and here it appears Wendy was still sporting the long tresses of her 'Miss Brahms' hairstyle. The second image is a wider view -- probably the original size -- and more clearly shows the unfinished quality of the outdoor set, as well as workmen standing off to the right watching the cast members. Image #3 is a remarkably fine shot of Wendy herself. The 4th image appeared in an English language textbook used in the Netherlands (thanks, Anneloes!). It is a posed shot of Pauline (Wendy) and Debbie Wilkins (Shirley Cheriton), an EastEnders character who left the show about mid-1987. Note that Shirley is the second from the left in the above chorus-line image. It's interesting to note that the English text in that textbook reads like an excerpt from an EastEnders' script, involving Debbie, Andy (her boyfriend), and Debbie's mum, Iris. The caption for this photo in the textbook is simply "Two EastEnders". |

These final three color images are various arrangements among the ladies of the cast. The middle of them is an especially good one of Wendy and Shirley. Note in the bottom image the scaffolding in the distance, which was possibly erected especially for the event for the use of the attending press. |

EastEnders |
When she started EastEnders this year, Ms. Richard was obliged to cut her gorgeous hair back so that Pauline could initially sport a much more practical collar-length coiffure. Happily, though, by 1986 it will have returned to its former exuberant state. |

A stock shot of Arthur (Bill Treacher) and Pauline (Wendy), who is holding baby Martin. This image appeared recently on the BBC news site for the 15-year salute to EastEnders. |
||
EastEnders |
This image appeared in the 1986 EastEnders Annual book (though I believe the photo was made in '85). It is an excellent shot and is a fine example of the break that Wendy had made by this time from her earlier character of Shirley Brahms. |
||
EastEnders |
The first BBC publicity card of Wendy as Pauline Fowler. I think it demonstrates very nicely the mature look for Pauline that Wendy was striving for. (Note: If you look carefully, you'll see this was from the same photo shoot as the publicity picture used for Wendy's 1987 Cinderella appearance.) |
||
EastEnders |
Though in color, these images are clearly from the same photo session. Your mebmeister considers the left-most shot Wendy's finest early Pauline portraits. What a lady! |
||
EastEnders |
A very rarely seen piece, this photo is an EastEnders publicity pic probably from early 1985 (judging by Wendy's hairstyle). Most interestingly, this photo is printed as a mailable post card. |

EastEnders |
Four photos from EastEnders' first location shoot. The Fowler family is in Southend-on-Sea, a resort town on the Thames estuary east of London. These shots are from mid-November, though the related episodes weren't aired until the next month. Judging from the surroundings, Susan Tulley, Bill Treacher, David Scarbrough, and Wendy are standing on the beach below the Western Esplanade, behind the Three Shells Cafe, a couple of hundred meters west of Southend Pier, with Maxim's (Westcliff) Casino in the distance. | ||

Your webmeister isn't sure if this is from a scene from the show in 1986, or just an outtake of the two actresses (the other lady is Anita Dobson, who played Angie Watts). |

Wendy joins a number of other UK stars in this BBC publicity photo for the show, shot on July 17th. Can you also find Lenny Henry, Adam Ant, Samantha Fox, and Noel Edmonds in the picture? |

EastEnders |
I think this is one of the finest of Wendy as "Pauline". It appears as a full-page shot in the EastEnders: The Inside Story book; Wendy confirmed it's from 1986. A color version of this shot was in the BBC's now-rare 1988 EastEnders wall calendar. Also, a similar photo was used as her publicity card for the show. She noted that the shots were taken out in the parking lot; she's holding a newspaper out of view to soften the light on her face. |

From an EastEnders greeting card style that the BBC probably put out in 1986. It's actually quite a good shot of Wendy, though unfortunately Gillian Taylforth (playing Kathy Beale) doesn't fare as well. |

Cinderella |
These six black & white photos are a publicity set done for Wendy's appearnce in the panto Cinderella, in mid-December of 1986 in Brighton, England. They were shot by or for the local newspaper and show Wendy in costume (as Dandini, servant of Prince Charming) on the stage and in her dressing room. What appears to be a case of champagne sits below the table -- the perks of celebrity! Note in the 5th photo Wendy seems to be standing behind a fake fruit-and-veg stand -- a subtle reference to her current work in EastEnders? The source of the final color photo is not certain, but it is clearly the same dressing room as seen in the black & white shot; however, oddly, this color shot is horizontally reversed-- the black & white shot above it is correct.. |

Blankety-Blank |
Wendy wore a 'fairy-godmother' costume from Cinderella for the Christmas episode of B-B. Interestingly, 18 years later she donned a very similar blue gown with tiara for her 2004 photo on the DPSA charity calendar. The middle photo is a black-and-white publicity shot of the B-B host and celebrity guests for the special Christmas episode, broadcast on Boxing Day, 1986. Les Dawson and Eddie Large are in front; standing are Syd Little, Samantha Fox, Lynda Baron, Wendy, and Frank Carson. The bottom black-and-white photo is of her and various colleagues from EastEnders who appeared together on one episode. Left to right: Paul Medford (Kelvin Carpenter), Wendy, Peter Dean (Pete Beale), Les Dawson (B-B's host), Leslie Grantham (Den Watts), Sandy Ratcliff (Sue Osman), and Gillian Taylforth (Kathy Beale). |

1986 Xmas season |
A rare photo of Wendy helping publicize the BBC's 1986 Christmas season programming. With her are members of other popular shows. From 'Allo, 'Allo is Carmen Silvera (left), Gordon Kaye (2nd left) and Vicki Michelle (right); from Hi-De-Hi! is Ruth Madoc (lower center); behind Wendy is radio/TV presenter Dave Lee Travis; and TV presenter Bob Monkhouse (2nd right). |

Wendy as a very handsome Pauline. The first image is from about May of this year, the second a month or so later. The third shot appeared in a mid-February issue of Radio Times The fourth is an excerpt from the 1987 edition of the EastEnders wall calendar. Of course, the picture itself was probably shot sometime around the middle of the previous year. The last appeared in Radio Times toward the end of the year. |

1987 EastEnders award event |
Joining Wendy are a number of her EastEnders
colleagues: Bill Treacher, Susan Tully, Julia Smith, and Leslie
Grantham. The occasion was the presentation of a Personality of
the Year award from the Variety Club of Great Britain. That
Smith, Grantham and Wendy are all gripping the award may be explained
by its inscription, which appears to read: "The Entire Cast &
Production Team of EastEnders. BBC TV Personality of 1987". |
Blankety-Blank |
Wendy is featured in this publicity shot for Blankety-Blank's 1987 Christmas special episode. With her on the signed photo is show host Les Dawson, and panel member actor-athelete Geoff Capes. The second photo is a screenshot of Wendy from the Blankey-Blank episode itself. |

EastEnders |
The first image is of Wendy as Pauline around July of the year. The 2nd image is from the EE 1989 Annual book. It's not a particularly good shot, but does give an idea of Pauline's typical appearance around this time. The 3rd image is from a commercial endorsement Wendy did this year. Since that's work, it seems appropriate to place the image here. It's an extremely attractive one, nevertheless. Interestingly, in her biog, she misstates her Cambridge Diet work as being in 1989. |

EastEnders |
The top image appears to be Wendy kitted out as Pauline Fowler (down to the gray cardigan sweater), but apparently relaxing off-set somewhere. Possibly shot in April of this year. The second and third images are probably from December of this year, since the EE storyline had Pauline spending the holiday in hospital. The color pic appeared most recently in The Mirror, Feb 1996. The last phot is a publicity shot from the set of the gameshow You Bet! Wendy appears with (from left to right) co-host Ellis Ward, panelist David Wilkie, panelist Roy Castle, and host Bruce Forsyth. |
